Country Chic VS City Bling

Country Chic

Tally Ho! The autumn/winter 2012 catwalks fell under Downton Abbey’s magical spell as tweed skirts, padded jackets, Fair Isle knits and peak caps stormed the runways! Fear not though ladies – there’s no need to hit Emmerdale Farm to get the look, as BrandAlley and the great British high street have the look nailed!

Fabrics are the key element to channeling this style – be sure to look for anything cosy looking, such as trendy tweed, luxe quilting, butter soft suede and winter knits in natural woodland tones like chestnut, forest green and taupe. Shape wise, much of the look is masculine, particularly the gentlemanly three-piece suits and Ulster-style coats, but we’ll be adding a feminine edge with fitted blazers, sexy tweed pencil skirts and cute animal motifs.

If going head to toe isn’t for you, it’s easy to work the look with country style accessories – (wellies not required!) – luxe gloves, flat caps, structured waist belts, brogues, lace up ankle boots and oversized bowler bags look great dressed down with denim and smartened up with tailored leather. For a budget friendly take, Topshop’s faux fur collar is the ultimate chic tweak to work this trend – at just £35 it’s perfect for pinning on to jackets, coats and knits for a bit of woodland wow.

City Bling

Hello party season! From dazzling geometric jewels to gleaming baroque embellishment, high shine extravagance rules! Whilst past seasons have seen jewels worked as subtle details, it’s all about going extravagant for Autumn/Winter – at Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Miu Miu models were piled high with cosmic rocks, chunky crystals and juicy jewels. Whilst this trend may look super luxe, the best news is that you don’t need a bank balance worthy of the crown jewels to rock this look – Autumn’s most opulent trend can be yours for a fraction of the cost (we won’t tell if you don’t)! Heavy embellishment can add volume, so the trick to this trend is to use it to draw attention to the areas you are most confident about – a jewelled top will draw the eye up and away if you’re leg conscious, whilst detailed shorts will add curves to slim frames.

You can even use the trend to glam up even your most basic wardrobe staples – Miss Selfridge’s jewelled collar will instantly transform your simple t-shirts and take them into party territory. Or, if you’re feeling needle nifty, head to websites such as www.the-beadshop.co.uk or www.e-beads.co.uk and buy packs of purse friendly beads which you can sew onto collars, cuffs and accessories. You’ll look so luxe you’ll be worthy of your own security guard!
