Guest post: Emma Campbell from What Emma Did on Falling for Autumn Trends

What Emma Did is a fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog set up in January 2010 by Emma Campbell. Emma studied Fashion Marketing & Journalism for 3 years whilst freelancing for various media publications and brands, before breaking into the Fashion PR world. The blog, What Emma Did, follows Emma’s fashionable thoughts, adventures and opinions in a chatty, diary style format, which led the blog to win the Cosmopolitan Best Fashion Newcomer award in 2010. The blog is an ideal mix of High St vs Designer, making it a versatile read for fashion fans out there.
Right before my very eyes, we’re in September already. There’s all this talk about the sham of a British Summer we’ve ended up with this year, and in terms of flaunting my summer fashion my one week holiday to Ibiza in August was my only chance this year to spend a good few days slipping on the bikinis and trotting around in tiny shorts and cropped tops.
As much as this is a little disheartening, Autumn is actually my favourite season when it comes to fashion, so I guess you could say I’m a little content with all the stores bringing out their new A/W ranges. Layering up and accessorising chunky looks has always been my favourite styling technique, so I’ve decided to box up my high summer wardrobe and make room for some new Autumnal pieces!
Here’s a round-up of some essential staple pieces that make fab transitional garments, to smoothly and stylishly take us into Autumn…

If, like myself, you’re a working lady who’s often on the go in the week, it’s always ideal to update your wardrobe with something that will remain a fashion fail safe. One of my favourites is a stylish, trusty mac; it can take you effortlessly from desk to drinks by simply slipping it on and pairing with tights and heels. Invest in a black or tan coloured mac, a versatile colour for both Summer and Winter. This style from Darling is great because it gives a fitted silhouette and is currently a great price.

Just because it’s Autumn, it doesn’t mean we have to go all doom and gloom – it’s still a great season to experiment with colour and inject some brights! Team your best fitting skinny jeans with a muted colour top that has a hint of yellow. This one from Full Circle at BrandAlley takes on the colour block trend and has a pop of colour to lift your mood.

It’s also a fun season to play around with print, with Aztec and Tribal remaining big players. Seeing as I love knee length skirts, especially fitted ones that can be worn for both day and night, I have fallen in love with this Vera Moda Aztec pencil skirt. It’s one of those skirts that you can wear with or without tights, and when paired with a black fitted top, it will look uber professional and smart for both work and play!

There are two trends that never go out of fashion and that’s Nautical and Military; every season we see elements of these two trends in some form or another. For this Autumn, opt for a knitted cardigan that incorporates a stripe pattern with military fastening, such as this Joules Cardigan. That way you can wear a simple blouse or T-Shirt underneath, with leggings or jeans, and the cardigan will transform your casual look.

Last but not least, whilst I’m focusing on layering up and adding some pattern and colour to our new season shop, I can’t forget accessories! Collars and torques are the key shapes for Autumn/winter, and for me it’s about keeping them simple yet big enough to still make a statement. These two styles from Jon Richard are clean and bold, and would finish off any outfit in style…
What items of clothing are you hoping to purchase to take you into Autumn? Will you be opting for a sophisticated Mac, or a totally different look? Either way, I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my fave picks, and enjoy your first Autumn shopping trip!
