Big eyebrows – the hottest trend in beauty

We’ve all been there where we’ve spent an evening trying to tidy up unruly eyebrows only to end up a bit too tweezer happy and plucking them to almost a line. Trouble is, back then that look wasn’t that strange and actually quite en vogue. Well 2012 is a new era and eyebrows are big and bold and here to stay. Cara Delavigne has a lot to answer for with the hottest trend in beauty this year!

They may be big and bold, but these brows are not the unkempt beasts we sported back in the 80’s. It’s all about a thick line of shapely brow that’s got the models, make-up artists and stars making us reach for a brow brush and colour.

Make-up artist Pecheux went for full and plump creating angles by pencilling the brows straight across with the same thickness from end-to-end at Derek Lam Spring/Summer 2012. He repeated the look at the Altuzarra show and this has only gone from strength to strength seeing models all over the SS13 catwalks channelling the look. It seemed the bigger the better when it came to brown.

You’d think this is a trend suited only for the dark skinned and naturally dark haired ladies, but this is one trend regardless of hair colour. Actress Kate Bosworth proves that even the fair skinned blonde babes can work the strong brow. Adding definition and framing the face, big brows widen the eyes and have an air of innocence mixed with danger. At the other end of the spectrum, another actress Camilla Belle also shows the bold brow look. As fairly naturally thick, Camille doesn’t have to try hard with this trend and with her raven locks she looks utterly sensational. Out in NYC recently, the actress vamped up the drama with arching brows and statement raspberry lips. It seems the age old rule of lips or eyes goes out the window with this trend so go big and bold for a show-stopping look.

This isn’t a new-fangled look, but with almost everything in fashion and beauty, we have our predecessors to thank for the biggest trend to sweep the nation (and stick!) this season. As early founders, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn knew a big brow meant business and oozed glamour. Model Emily Senko channels Audrey Hepburn’s brow-accentuating pose, showing that big brows are beautiful, so if you haven’t already, pick up a brow pencil and lightly colour in your brow. Our personal tip, get an arched brow brush and a dark brown eye-shadow and work the colour up slowly going just above your natural brow. Add an angle towards the top middle of the brow for the natural arch and you’ll be loving this look in no time.

Update from the blogosphere #91 – Beauty box comparisons

Now LFW is over and summer is well and truly on its way out, you could understand if people were a little disheartened on the blogosphere…but they weren’t! Instead we saw a massive influx of beauty blogs that kept us entertained, interested and wanting to try some new things out. We’ve known for a while that companies and brands are sending out beauty boxes to beauty enthusiasts who love to try new products, brands, and anything beauty related so this week we thought we’d find out what you think.

Sabrina from A Little Obsessed blogspot received her Joliebox this week and was really pleased with the goodies inside which ranged from masks and scrubs to hair ties, lipbalm and even offers and discounts. For ÂŁ10 a month Sabrina was impressed with the little box of goodies and we have to admit, we love the idea of trying samples before spending big bucks on products that might not be right for our skin.

Selfridges also offered a beauty box last month as a one-off which was hugely popular, and sold too well! So much so that they had to create an alternative to give to the people that were oversold. Sian from Quite Frankly She Said blog was one of these people and she received hers last week. For £15 plus £4.95 shipping, Sian received over £100 worth of amazing products that she was well and truly ecstatic about. Take a look here to find out what she got.

There seem to be a lot of beauty boxes doing the rounds and it’s nice to see people comparing them for us. Flutter and Sparkle blog received both the Glossybox and She said beauty box this month and loved them both, from the packaging to the contents, but which was best? We’d have to agree with Flutter and Sparkle blog that we’d like everyone to receive the same contents, which unfortunately doesn’t seem to be the case for Glossybox. Although both contents were really interesting and according to Flutter and Sparkle, really good products, Glossybox had a lot of sample sachets which look more like freebies rather than actual beauty samples. It sounds like She Said Beauty box pipped Glossybox to the post in this month’s vote off. It was even cheaper at £11.95 whilst Glossybox was £12.95 plus P&P!

With so many beauty boxes on offer, it’s important to get the right one for you. Here at BrandAlley HQ, we think they’re a great idea of being savvy with your money as they allow you to try lots of different brands you may not have heard of before, whilst actually testing them out to see what suits you and your skin and hair.

If you’ve tried one before, let us know by commenting below and tell us which you tried and why you loved it.

Have a great weekend!

Guest post: Money expert, Hilary Osborne shares her tips on stretching your money

As editor of guardian.co.uk/money, a regular contributor to the Guardian and an avid bargain hunter, Hilary Osborne is a dab hand at making your money go a little further.

Since graduating from Oxford University, Hilary Osborne has spent most of her career writing about money and what the best ways are to spend and save it. Having worked at What Money, What Investment and at the Guardian for the last seven years there are few more qualified to advise on how to get the most from your precious pennies.

It’s been a tough few years on our wallets, with rising prices for food and energy putting a squeeze on household budgets. Most of us are looking for any chance we can to save. If you’ve already done some of the big things – switching energy providers, reducing the miles you drive where you can, and making sure you’re not paying over the odds for any borrowing you are doing, it’s time to consider a few smaller savings. After all, the pennies can quickly add up.

Here are five ways to make your money go a little bit further:

Buy in bulk

Most things at the supermarket are better value if you buy a larger pack. This isn’t always the case – check the unit price on the shelf to make sure before you put it in your basket – and it will only save you cash if you are going to use everything before the use-by date. When it comes to cleaning products, you might be able to get better deals if you go online or to a cash and carry, where large packs are often available.

 Buy with a friend

Two wallets are sometimes better than one. If you want to buy in bulk but can’t store the items, or do not need them all, you can still get the savings by finding a friend who wants the same items and splitting the cost. Shopping with a friend in the supermarket can help you cut fuel costs, while shopping online together allows you to split the delivery cost where there is a fixed price.

Have a list

The best way to avoid buying things you don’t need – and to be prepared for bargains. Taking a shopping list to the supermarket can help you avoid buying things you already have at home, and will mean you get everything you do need so you don’t end up doing top-up shops during the week.

Having a long-term list of things you need for your home or wardrobe can be useful too – as soon as you see a sale you can make a beeline for the things you want. If your list also includes their usual price you can tell straight away if it’s a good deal.

Have a present cupboard

Snapping up gifts for people in advance of their birthdays or Christmas when you see them in sales can mean saving money, or getting a better present for your budget, but it can be easy to put things away and forget that you’ve bought them. Find somewhere to keep all of the things you buy in advance. If you have kids and often need to buy things for their friends’ birthdays it can be useful to have a couple of pre-bought things to pick from so you don’t find yourself dashing round in search of a present at the last minute. (And if you are not adverse to re-gifting, you can add anything you have been given that you do not want.)

Know what size you are

There’s nothing more frustrating than buying something and then discovering it doesn’t fit – and it can cost money if you get it wrong. If you’re buying in a sale at some retailers, you won’t be able to get a refund, while if you shop online you will pay a delivery cost and the price of returning the goods. Dress sizes vary from retailer to retailer, but most will show what measurements they are made for on their website. Get measured so you know what you are looking for and can reduce your chances of buying the wrong thing.

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of spotting a bargain, and with a bit of forward planning you make a good deal even better. These are some of my tips for making your money go a bit further without making compromises – what are yours?

Update from the blogosphere #89 – LFW round-up

Without a shadow of a doubt, fashion’s most exciting week finished on Tuesday (in the UK) and is still going strong in Milan and then Paris. It’s no wonder that the blogosphere has been quick to pick up on all the trends, street styles, catwalk shows and gossip from LFW so we picked a few of our faves to give you a weekly round-up.

If you caught our street style blog on Tuesday (check it out here), you’ll have noticed we saw a lot of camouflage and khaki. Military style was clearly a big trend on the streets at LFW, mostly in jacket form but Lily from What I Heart Today blog was rocking a pair of camou green jeans. We also saw lots of fabulous statement necklaces and again, Lily was working this look. Her final outfit for LFW was bang on trend and looked effortlessly cool. Check out all the outfits on her blog here.

When we quizzed the stylish people at LFW about their favourite shows, The Ashish spring 2013 catwalk was right up there. We spotted on Fashion Loving blog a mini synopsis which summarised the collection perfectly and made us all here at BrandAlley HQ keen to replenish our sports luxe wardrobes. Top tip: sequins and sportswear are going to be huge SS13.

Everyone knows the UK style is edgy and cool and LFW didn’t disappoint. Belle about town blogspot commented how London Fashion Week was once again showing the eclectic and edgy side to British fashion noting the key trends. Our favourite look for SS13 has to be the crisp white trend that was seen at lots of different shows as it embraces the cleaner side to UK fashion. But don’t think this trend is boring. Oh no! From trouser suits to flowing maxis, every style was incorporated so androgyny still rules this fair land. Plus, nothing says summer like  all white. For all the top trends Belle about town blogspot noted, head to the blog here.

To catch a round-up of all the shows in picture form, head to Emmie Lou Loves blogspot as here she give a snapshop of a few key pieces from each show so you’re sure to know which trends are going to be big and what to start looking out for now.

Have a great weekend!
